Also for Cozumel we had opted to go on our own.
There are loads of taxis waiting for you in the port area. We went to the Palancar Beach. It is a very calm beach. In the morning when we got there I think we were three families in total! Towards mid-day there were some more people, but it is not the party beach. There are many other beaches in Cozumel. Some have a fee for entering, but often offer free drinks and beach chairs in the price.
We paid 10 dollars for two beach chairs, which was perfect. We also decided to go on a snorkelling trip with the kids. The kids loved snorkelling and we saw many fish swimming very close and also sea stars. The guide was nice, and he had a floating devise with him to pull the kids when they got tired. But both Miriam and Benjamin managed the snorkling just fine and loved to dive. There was a young boy of 3 years also on the trip, but he didn't want to go in the water in the end so he staid on the boat with a parent. Everyone has an inflatable life jacked that you can fill with air if you want to stay on the surface or empty if you want to dive.
The kids also liked very much to just play on the beach and dive in the the clear water. We found a few shells, but we had to leave them when we passed the security control going back to the boat.
Unfortunately the water was very bad just after mid-day. It started raining when we were on the snorkling trip, so the clothes and shoes we had left on the beach (the bags were in a locker) got soaked, and we had to hide in the restaurant until the rain and the lightning had stopped. But that was ok, since it wasn't very cold and the tacos we had in the restaurant were very nice.
There wasn't a problem going back to the ship. There were many taxis waiting.
