Bahamas on a cruise

Leaving Fort Lauderdale
It was very exciting to finally be moving. When we left we had already managed to have lunch, go to our cabins and unpack, swim in the pool, and find the free soft yoghurt ice cream machine.

Setting sail party

The next morning we woke up to this view from our balcony. It was very hot an humid already at 7:00 in the morning.

Nassau, Bahamas

Breakfast with view over town

The first of our stop was Nassau Bahamas. We had chosen not to take an excursion with the cruise as they are expensive. Instead we walked off the ship after having had breakfast. We arrived 7:00 in the morning, and got off the ship around 8:00. First we passed by all the taxis offering a tour of the town. It could be a nice thing to do, but we only wanted to see the fort and then go to the beach, so we declined.

Nassau

The fort is not very far from the ship, but with the heat and the streets not being very easy to walk with many cars it would have been a good idea to take a taxi going up there. The kids did complain a bit. Take lots of water with you. There are shops where you can buy cheap water on the streets, so it is not a problem if you forget.

The fort is small, but quite fun. The kids liked the idea of the fort protecting the island against the Pirates of the Caribbean. Which I am not sure it did. It said on an information board that the fort never was in a battle. But it was still interesting to imagine, and see the cannons, and the nice view over the island.

We would have taken a taxi to the beach, but all taxis by the fort was waiting for people who were on a tour with them, so we walked to the beach. It was actually further than expected, so it would have been nice with a taxi.

Junkanoo beach

The beach closest to the island is called Junkanoo beach. It is not great, so it might be a good idea to take a taxi to a beach further away from the port. However, the sand was nice and the water crystal clear so we enjoyed or beach day. We chose to go to the Tiki beach hut, which I wouldn't do again. We paid 20 dollars for beach chairs and 2 cocktails, which is not expensive. But it turns out you have to pay another 20 dollars to have parasols to protect you from the sun, and the drinks were honestly not very good.

After about an hour of swimming we went back to the ship with the kids. We had lunch on the ship and the kids then went to the kids club. Markus and I went back to Nassau town, and took a coffee in Starbucks and did some internet surfing. After that we bought some Rum cake and some rum. We went to the Tortuga shop as it was close and easy to find. The rum there is from the Cayman islands and not Bahamas but it was nice. We also had a cocktail in a bar/restaurant with a great view over the water and our ship.

Pier runners - people almost missing the ship. These were 30 min late!
